Tactical Networks

A fiber-based networking solution for tactical, temporary and transportable connectivity that enables a complete communications system including wireless (Wi-Fi, cellular) and wired all from a small durable transit case.

A better way to build and operate tactical networks

tactical, temporary and transportable networks

Traditional transportable networks were cumbersome and meant setting up communications and IT in adverse conditions required truckloads of equipment and up to 20 or more personnel. Tactical teams were often forced to use ad-hoc solutions that were not interoperable, leaving even more issues to resolve – taking hours or even days to operationalize.

An easier means is to use Tellabs Optical LAN (OLAN) to ensure communications readiness from a small hand carry case. Tellabs OLAN is based on Passive Optical Networking (PON) technology, supports advanced IP/Ethernet functionality and takes advantage of the benefits of singlemode fiber cabling. This portable networking solution integrate well with compute, storage, security, communications, wired plus wireless connectivity, and networking powering. It helps IT teams at the tactical edge provides a network that is easy to transport, set-up, teardown, power-on and provide a multitude of services. It can span long distances in a light, reliable, secure, hardened and small form.

Quick Facts

  • Quickly deploy Passive Optical Network “in a box”
  • Fully contained secure communications
  • Small form-factor LAN solution in a hand carry transit case
  • Optical LAN provides greater density in smaller footprint
  • Fiber cabling weighs less and occupies less space than copper
  • Enables rapid deploy and easy redeploy

Integrates compute, storage, security, communications, powering and networking in a compact, hardened tactical and transportable form-factor

This tactical PON solution offers a modern fiber-based design that integrates well with edge networking, portable data center, mobile computing and communications. The combination of PON technology and fiber optic cabling offers tighter security, greater scalability and is simple to deploy compared to legacy networks architectures.

Strict Security – PON removes known network security gaps. It presents a smaller attack surface, and is ideal for zero trust architecture, as it requires less human touch to manage. Furthermore, fiber optic cabling is inherently more secure.

Compact and Scalable – The compact PON Optical Line Terminal (OLT) is only one rack unit in height (1.75 inches). Though small in size, the PON OLT delivers greater density. For example, a traditional Ethernet switch can connect 48 endpoints, a 1RU PON OLT can connect over 2,000. PON allows far superior connectivity distances across 12 to 18 miles. While fiber cabling is smaller than copper and can support greater connectivity density plus nearly limitless bandwidth.

Rapid Deploy and Redeploy – Operationally, the PON system offers centralized intelligence and management. That means within a software defined management environment, the entire communications system is pre-provisioned with global profiles that flow to the connected devices in a plug-and-play manner.

This compact tactical system is built on standards-based PON technologies (2.5 gigabit asymmetrical G-PON and 10 gigabit symmetrical XGS-PON) and standards-based advanced Ethernet technologies. It is ideal for tactical, transportable and temporary networking because it allows:

Complete and Converged – The basic configuration includes an OLT with eight PON ports selectable for either G-PON or XGS-PON. This OLT can be equipped with either Gigabit or 10-Gigabit Ethernet uplinks. The OLT is then bundled with a 2:32 optical distribution splitter for point to multipoint transmission to Optical Network Terminals (ONT).

Easy Service Delivery – The PON manager software provides the one console and one screen control to orchestrate consist, repeatable, error-free IT policies and procedures through global profiles. This is the user interface that IT staff will access to perform faster network provisioning, configurations, moves, adds, changes and troubleshooting.

Flexible Connectivity – This PON system is contained in a ruggedized carrying case and can include an ONT with 48-ports of gigabit Ethernet. Connectivity can be extended even further with deep fiber ONTs positioned 12 to 18 miles away.
