Passive Optical Networks (PON) is a fiber-based technology that is supported in the Army ICAN-Div2 Guidelines. PON increases capacity while decreasing complexity, cyber vulnerabilities, and operational costs. By decreasing the operational complexity and levels of effort, PON allows network operators to focus on emerging critical cyber requirements vs traditional network layer 2 infrastructure.
PON is inherently Software Defined and adheres to Zero Trust Principles. It provides commitment bandwidth (e.g., Service Level Agreements) per user, tenant, or application for key priorities such as VDI, CSFC, Wireless, LIFI, etc. PON infrastructure now also supports transport for higher speed, low latency 5G requirements with speeds from 25G-400G. This technology is proven across many DoD installations. It is recognized in the DoD Digital Modernization Strategy Document, DoD UFC, JITC, UC APL, BICSI, and TIA standards.
