Under the leadership of Magellan Network Services, Tellabs’ strategic solution design, deployment and service partner for EMEA and APAC regions, Tellabs Optical LAN has been installed at the World Expo Dubai 2020 in the amazing Sustainability Pavilion (download Tellabs FlexSym Series overview).
The World Expo Dubai 2020
The main site of Expo Dubai 2020 will cover 1083 acres and be located near Dubai’s southern border with Abu Dhabi. The master plan, designed by the American firm HOK, is organized around a central plaza enclosed by three large themed districts including Opportunity, Mobility and Sustainability.
This Expo features small start-up companies, large multi-national corporations and nearly 200 participating countries, and be visited by millions of tech-savvy attendees. It will foster an environment of creation, collaboration and innovation over a 6-month duration from October 2021 to March 2022.
After the Expo is completed, 80% of the site will be transformed into a conference and exhibition center. It is expected that the property will be repurposed to be home to about 1 million residents and create over 500,000 jobs.
The Sustainability Pavilion (Terra) and modern Passive Optical LAN
The U.S. Green Building Council Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certified Sustainability Pavilion, named Terra, promotes ecology, sustainable technologies, and design by providing immersive experiences. The Sustainability Pavilion combined the architectural, planning and industrial design talents of New York located Grimshaw and the audio-visual, IT, Security and Acoustic consulting prowess of New York headquartered Cerami. Tellabs Optical LAN was chosen as the best possible fiber-based connectivity infrastructure because the overarching purpose of the Sustainability Pavilion is to showcase leading technologies for:
- Sustainability
- Healthy and Smart Building, including IoT
- And, exemplify a modern Smart City prototype
Specifically, the Tellabs Optical LAN favored for its:
- IoT smart building interworking
- Highest degree of network uptime availability
- And, flexibility to adapt aesthetically
To securely control the high bandwidth AV projection and lighting equipment, running the continuous lighting shows, over the vast distances involved with in the Pavilion – and to keep within the low energy, sustainability theme, the Expo architect, consultants and engineers were in unison that only modern Passive Optical LAN technology would suffice.
To ensure the greatest network high availability, Tellabs industry leading with PON protection with geo-graphically redundant OLTs, fiber route diversity and end-to-end PON path protection was the only possible choice. This is because any interruption to the continuous virtual-reality lighting shows would be disastrous with 30,000 visitors expected to visit the Sustainability Pavilion each day.
The discrete aesthetics of the Tellabs 140W Optical Network Terminal (ONT140W) wall faceplate ONTs were crucial. The Pavilion has a spectacular black, domed projection ceiling. The discretely cabled, black ONT faceplates were once again the dream choice for the Expo architect, consultants and engineers.
Delivering upon the theme of sustainability, after the Expo is finished the Sustainability Pavilion will be turned into a Science Exploratorium. The Tellabs Optical LAN will remain active for many years to come as a meaningful legacy, inspiring future generations of likeminded innovators, original thinkers and pioneers.
