A biproduct of these tough economic times, brought on by COVID-19, is often compromise. The goal is always to design, build and operate networks that deliver the greatest performance, reliability, security and scalability. Yet, today’s difficult financial climate may force companies to make network purchasing decisions based solely on cost. Such a compromise on costs often comes at the expense of network performance and longevity of the initial investment.
There’s no compromise with Tellabs Optical LAN!
Tellabs Optical LAN provides investment protection with a future-proof design that delivers industry leading flexibility with the best possible capacity and density. In particular, the Tellabs FlexSym Series can be equipped with either symmetrical 10G XGS-PON (ITU-T G.9807.1) and 2.5G G-PON (ITU-T G.984), and it stands ready to support NG-PON2 (ITU-T G.989) in the future.
Tellabs Optical LAN customers have spoken of good capital expense savings and fantastic operational savings, while improving network uptime, removing network points of vulnerability and future-proofing their network. Better yet, there is cost parity with Tellabs’ 10G PON and G-PON and Optical LAN flexible design options offer additional smart money savings.
Cost parity with Tellabs 10G PON and G-PON
Today, our customers are deploying Tellabs FlexSym Series Optical LAN that supports both symmetrical 10G XGS-PON and 2.5G G-PON. This can be done with no premium in CapEx price. Thus, the installations that leverage Tellabs FlexSym Series equipment have highest confidence in ensuring the highest degree of network performance and investment protection.
In this cost study, we compared the relative expense of deploying Tellabs FlexSym OLT6 using G-PON with deep fiber Tellabs ONT140Cs and Tellabs FlexSym OLT6 using 10G XGS-PON with deep fiber Tellabs FlexSym ONT205s. In both scenarios, the Tellabs FlexSym OLT6 is equipped with the Tellabs FlexSym OIU8 PON service module. The main difference is one cost model featured G-PON XFP pluggable optics with a 1:32 optical split (and ONT140Cs) and the other utilized symmetrical 10G XGS-PON XFP pluggable optic with a 1:64 optical split (and ONT205s). This study proves cost parity between G-PON and XGS-PON and confirms future investment protection for customers seeking lower price solutions today.
Please note that these cost studies are approximate estimates only, and not quotes, nor are they guarantees. Actual project costs will vary based on numerous factors including, but not limited to, geographic region and local market impacts.
Additional smart money savings
Outside of a typical CapEx and OpEx price comparison, there are many other smart money savings opportunities with a Passive Optical LAN design versus traditional switch architecture, such as:
- Higher density in less space – Return real estate to revenue generating purposes.
- Extended reach – Eliminate IDFs and MDFs, and return space to revenue generating use.
- Converged networks – Support all IoT and smart buildings services, including wireless.
- Digital transformation – Graceful migration from analog to digital IP voice and video.
- Business continuity – Superior network uptime with higher availability.
- Investment protection – 10-year TCO has no network equipment nor cabling refresh.
- Flexible fiber cabling – Fiber is ideal where access is limited or restricted.
- Savings rippling effect – Many building/campus dependencies can be lowered.
Tellabs Optical LAN offers flexible design options with the best capacity and density. It scales bandwidth capacity, and number of connected devices, with true network needs. OLAN can connect any network design, cable, service and endpoint. It breaks traditional network barriers for connecting modern smart buildings and IoT. Optical LAN is a wise investment with the least disruptive path to future technologies – thus, without compromise!
